These shorts are knit from the waist to just above the knee (top-down) with a mix of stockinette and ribbing. Begin by knitting the shorts at the waistline in the round with ribbing. Pause the work and create a 4-stitch double-knitted cord which will be placed around the waist. Insert the cord around the waist while folding the waistband in half and knit the live stitches on the waistband together with the cast-on stitches. The back of the shorts is formed with German Short Rows back and forth in stockinette, then the body of the shorts is worked in the round also in stockinette. The gusset is formed before stitches are divided for the legs. Legs are knit separately in the round while also working decreases. Each leg ends with short ribbing and a curled bind off.
